MEXICO, Mexico City – Arguably the main hubbub of Centro Histórico, the historic center of Mexico City, La Ciudadela Crafts Market is all kinds of vibrant and colourful. And that may be the understatement of the year.
Textiles from Oaxaca, ceramics from Chiapas, and lucha libre shirts, are just few of the many items that has made La Ciudadela every traveller’s go-to place in Mexico City for artisanal Mexican handcrafted products and souvenirs. The market has significant history as well, initially conceived in 1965 as part of a tourism effort building up the 1968 Olympics that was held in Mexico.
The market is huge, with numerous alleyways and over 350 vendors resulting in a sense liveliness and interaction that knows no bounds. In totality, La Ciudadela transcends a typical marketplace, offering a whole cultural experience in itself, one not to be missed when in Mexico City.
