GERMANY, Eltz Castle – Huge, enormous castles that peer over the land are signature of the ancient monumental architecture that you can find littered all over Europe. Not Burg Eltz though, this German castle is tucked neatly in a forest, standing quietly as one of the last castles remaining on the left bank of the Rhine River.
Built in the 12th century, the Eltz Castle has been owned by the same Eltz family for 850 years, passing through a mind-numbing 33 generations. While Burg Eltz is not one of the stops along the famous Romantic Road tour of Germany, we’d recommend making a detour to visit this serene and quite frankly, magical castle.
It’s not mainstream by any means, but it’s just as beautiful.
